What to do if you have been arrested
- Decide whether to hire an attorney. If so, do it as soon as possible
- Don't say anything. Law enforcement professionals take classes to teach them how to trick people into saying something that will hurt them later on. Lie to the police and you may see that lie thrown back in your face at trial.
Reason for wanting an attorney at this stage:
If you have been arrested bail will usually be set and a date for arraignment (a plea of guilty or not guilty) will be set. In addition to advocating on your behalf in the case of a plea-bargain at arraignment, an attorney may be able to argue to have your bail reduced or eliminated at this early stage.
